Primary Hard drive failure

I have a dell laptop that's running XP. Sometimes when I power the laptop on it errors out "Primary hard drive failure". If I restart the system, the desktop will come up without a problem. I have already ran a check disk.

If the drive is getting ready to go, sometimes the bearings get sticky and the drive doesn't spin up to speed when cold. Time to back everything up and start looking for a new drive.

As a temporary workaround you can set the boot order in BIOS to Floppy, CDROM, then HDD. Sometimes that will delay trying to boot from the HDD long enough that it is spinning at the correct speed.
