primary and secondary exchange servers confused

I have 2 exchange servers, 1 is at our main office and one is used at a remote site. The servers appear to have decided to swap their roles and the primary server "appaears" to have become the secondary server and vice versa. I say this as internal email is now taking 4 or 5 seconds to arrive and I am wondering if it is being sent to the remote site server and then back again.

Any suggestions as to what the problem is? I have been looking round Microsoft's support site but can't find anything that appears relevant to E2k and W2k server.
