My cust just switched providers for their PRI and now they have to dial 1 & an area code for local calls which they did not have to do before and the new PRI vendor is saying it is our problem. Nothing changed and all I did is move a cable from 1 smart jack to the other. I could just add 1 & the local area code in the local ARS patters but they have numerous faxes that are set up to go off hook directly to the 70 pool. Any ideas??

Rock <- You -> Hard Place

It's too bad the new PRI provider isn't more flexable. Because if they can't change you to 7 digit local dialing, you must either have the FAX machines dial 1+AC+number or 9+number and add the 1+AC to the ARS tables.

They keep saying that there should not be a problem with 7 digit dialing. I'll be going out there tomorrow to do battle!!!!

Who is the service provider and in what state is the service provided?

Some if not all state public utility commissions have requirements about a jurisdiction's dialing format or plan for the network or calling areas. The NANPA website has the dialing plans for all states and jurisdications that are administered by the NANPA.

If the provider does not comply with the requirement you can file a complaint with the appropriate body for further action.

Hope this helps!

Find out what the LPIC and PIC are set for. Having to add a leading 1 on what should be a local call is normally a symptom of incorrect LPIC/PIC. And, could cause excessive charges for the customer.

Local calls do NOT require LPICs or PICs to complete regardless of whether they have 7 digits or 10 digits or 1+10D. The dialing format has nothing to do with what LPIC/PIC a line has assigned to it. That is determined by the LEC/CLEC/IXC switch translations, unless you use "dial around" (101xxxx) codes when placing calls.

It's all about the phrasing I guess. I work at a carrier who has full LATA wide coverage dialed as 10 digits. No leading 1 needed for any call within the LATA, regardless of NPA/NXX. All our customers refer to those calls as local. If a customer who was using us moves to another carrier (changing LPIC) who doesn't allow full LATA wide coverage, then all the sudden, calls that used to complete 10 now require a 1+. This may not be what the real problem is, but based on what the trouble description was, it was a thought.

Thanks all for the info- I found out from the carrier that they were using a DMS-500 even though the project mgr told me they would set it up as 5ESS compatible. When I changed the switch to DMS-100 I was able to do 7 digit local dialing. Now they have a prob dialing 911 so I routed 911 calls over a copper line temporarily until they figure it out

Cool, thanks for the update! So, in the end, it was just a variant mismatch? Good luck on the 911 issue!
