PRI going down

I have a customer with a PRI that keeps going down about every other day for approx. 10-15 minutes. The errors I see are PRI Protocol Mismatch, but I have worked with the provider and the only way we could get the PRI up and running was to set it to DMS-100, B8ZS, ESF (5ESS would only work outbound). Does anyone have any ideas as to any other settings on the Legend that can be manipulated to effect a PRI Protocol Mismatch.

The provider says they see a loss of signal error on their end indicating that they no longer see the Legend equipment.

Is the provider a LEC, CLEC or IXC? Has the provider been cleared to run an extended test to a smart jack (if one exists) or a CSU? If so, what did the testing reveal?

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

They are a CLEC and have sent a tech to the smart jack to test and found no errors. The system is close to the smart jack so no extension was needed. They see the CSU fine as well when they test, but it still goes down every other day.

Find out what kind of switch the CLEC is using to provide service to you. This is one of the most important pieces of information needed.

Ask the vendor to make sure the CO protocol is set for NTNAPRI (Northern Telecom North American PRI). Also, the field for L1 Flags in the Trunk Sub Group should be set to Yes. (The foregoing information was provided in a handout written by Hardy Wright of Lucent Technologies.)

If the switch-type they are emulating is DMS 100, make sure that they are using NI-1 protocol, not NI-2. NI-2 will cause all sorts of problems. And make sure you have programmed the switch type as DMS 100 in PRI programming. They probably cannot set the L1 flags on their side - but you can always ask. Most of the newer switches they have out there - don't even make that layer available to the Telco. Some only have two options: NI-2 or NI-1 (which they sometimes call "custom" - although it it is not really the "AT&T Custom" as on a 5ESS switch emulation).

crumthwacket - I still have that piece of paper "compiled by hardy" handwritten on the back. Absolutely invaluable back in the day of the first PRI or two.

photon - invaluable is an understatement. Tier III support in Denver (Lucent) faxed me that some years back and I've sent it along to many friends over the years. I wonder where he is now? Anyone know?
