previewing and exporting

I have just started using Premiere and I am shocked. ALl I wanted to do was save a captured 1 hour clip to file and it said it would need one day to prepare the preview. The computer I have at my disposal it really fast and has loads of memeory, it was especialy built to deal with video. Is it normal that this preview function takes so long or have i missed something?
