Prevention of Netware messages on school network 1

We have a school Novell 4.11 network with NT workstations and some Win 3.11 "boot-ROM" diskless work stations. They all use the Novell Application Launcher ZEN desktop. We have removed the ability for students to send messages from the system through renaming "send.exe".

This has stopped the messaging being accessable from the NT workstations, however the students can still send messages through the Win 3.11 machines using the MSWord 6 "File"\"Open"\"Network" menus. It appears that this opens the 16 bit NWUSER.EXE application to access network drives in word. It also allows messages to be sent. We have renamed all instances of nwuser.exe on the network but this has not disabled their access. Is this function built into MSWord 6 (it isn't available to the Word97/2000 users)and how can this be disabled.

If it isn't possible to disable it, can all network messages be monitored or logged as there is a bit of a discipline problem at the school with inapropriate messages being sent by students during class time.

Many thanks for any help as it has consumed a lot of time to no avail, trying to sort it out.

Cheers
Eric

Eric - I take it tellin' the students to "Knock It Off" didn't work? :)

Novell's TID 10022086 may help you.

Also, (I could be reaching here but...) perhaps you could get creative and rename the 16bNWUSER.exe to p9ry1.txt (or something unique) - move it to another directory.

Change the date/time on the PC your working on to years ago. That way, if your students get pro-creative, and look for any files modified between last week and yesterday - they wont find your new "text" file, nor it's new home.

Or - within the registery try:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novell\Network Provider\Send Message]
"Enable"="NO"

Hope one of these help. Good Luck ~

Maybe using Send /a=n in the login script. This disables all incoming messages. So even if someone sends a message it will not be shown on any workstation. Lee Smith
