We have an HP LaserJet 4SI. We have the standard 2 paper cassettes (both letter size). We keep plain paper in the top tray and check stock in the bottom. When either tray runs out of paper, it pulls "paper" or "check stock" out of the other tray to finish the print job.

Is there a way to turn this feature off, so that if the tray runs out of paper, the print job stops and tells you to load paper to that tray before it will continue printing?

If there`s no option on the printer, in the paperhandling or configuration menu called Autocont, that can be set to off, then you must send a PJL command to prevent the printer to autocontinue from next available tray.
From a DOS commandprompt in the program called EDIT send a PJL command like this :
Ec%-12345X@PJL DEFAULT AUTOCONT=OFF
Ec%-12345X

Simply chose print from the application should do the trick and the printer should respond with a blank page.
Note: Printer has to be connected via a parallelcable. The Ec stands for escape sequence, and is a small sign (arrow) pointing left is made by pressing Ctrl+P and then Esc.
