Preventing objects from being selected

I created an object and placed it in a Master page. I would like to lock it so that it doesn't select as I select other items on my regular page. The problem is when I marque select the items I wish to move, the object from the Master page is also selected. Is there a way to marque select my items without the inclusion of the object from the Master page.

In your master page select object and do F6 to lock it.
In your normal page select all. Then hold down the shift key and click on the locked object to de-select it. Now you can move all the other items together.
