Prevent the autonumber change to 0 when compacting

Does anyone know how to compacting a back end database without change the autonumber field to zero. Normally when we compacting a database, it also change the number in autonumber field to zero.

The only way that I know of is to make sure there is at least one non deleted record in the table before compacting the database.
