MF 1.8 on Win2K. Is there an EASY way to restrict users from saving data to the server's drive? I just want them to save to data to their local PC. I know some people have posted solution to this but most of the solutions require scripting of some type which is not my forte.

thanks.

Thanatos,

In the apps themselves point the default save locations to their local drive. Example: in Word, go to tools, options, then file locations. Pick the drive you want to normally save their data to. When the user saves it automatically points them in their first choice, they can however change it to whatever.

Remember.... That data saved on local workstations is more volatile (meaning harder to recover in the event of a problem) than data saved on the server. Workstation corruption happens alot more than on Servers mainly due to the fact that servers once setup don't have alot of more software added to them.

As a note to what tpulley is saying, ideally you would want users to save to a fileserver rather than to a terminal server - and definitely not into their profiles!

Unfortunately, despite the great "hide drives" feature of the zak, drives are only hidden from Explorer, not applications.

The route around this that I use is just to make sure that all areas I don't want users to save to are locked down with the appropriate permissions.

This can take a bit of doing, since if, for example, Word needed to write a temporary file (which it does all the time :p) to a read-only part of the disk, in all likelihood the user would get a Dr Watson message - or the app would crash, if you'd disabled the good Doctor.

Some admins I know use a util called Appsense.

Hope this helps
