Prevail local profile instead of roaming

I would like to know if it's possible that users that are working outside the network, when they connect to the network the local profile make a copy to the roaming profile that is stored in the server and the local profile prevail to the roaming profile copy.

Top of my head try redirecting special folders using GPO (such as My Docs, AppData, Desktop etc) and set the GPO to use sync where the default action is the client copy is the most up to date.

This obviously requires the user to logon to the network before and also they must use the same client machine. (e.g. corporate laptop)
