preserving folder locations when automating "save as" commands

sorry for the convoluted subject line... I am trying to automate the resizing and re-compression of multiple JPEG images that will be saved across multiple folders.

I have created an action to resize and recompress and can then apply that action through the automate/batch command.

The problem I am experiencing has to do with saving the files back into their original locations.

To start the procedure, I specify file/automate/batch and select the I specify the source folder and designate "save and close" for the destination.

This properly opens all files in the folder (and subfolders) I have specified, BUT it prompts me with the JPEG Options dialog box for each image. If I sit there and select "OK", the image is properly saved. Pretty time consuming to sit there clicking the mouse, though.

The alternative is going back to the actions window, clicking on the "Save" portion of the action to toggle it to the "ON" position, and then running the batch. No dialog boxes are displayed, but every image is saved back to the folder I was working in when I recorded the save action.

Checking or unchecking the "dialog on/off" boxes in the action palette does not appear to make any difference.

I have checked through the manual & online help, and serached through the forum, and cannot find anything to point me in the right direction. What I really want is to have my action applied to images in their original directories, but with no need for manual intervention. Any assistance or suggestions folk can offer would certainly be appreciated!

Tahnks in advance - jared

I assume running the batch process on one folder at a time is not practical.

You might experiment with other programs. I have seen several programs floating around on the net that are designed specifically to resample web graphics (xnview.com is one freebie that comes to mind). may offer some other useful resampling apps.

Hi Jaredr,
Im not sure if I understand your question properly. Try to set destination NONE and put the save command in your action. ...........................Mtj

Hi Jaredr,
Im not sure if I understand your question properly. Try to set destination NONE and put the "save command" in your action. There you specify the quality and it doesnt ask you again whan action is running. ...........................Mtj

Here's what I did:

1. Open an image.
2. Create a new action (i named it jpg)
3. Save As command choosed quality then hit Save.
4. Stop recording.

Now:

File > Automate > Batch

Source > Folder
Choose > (directory they are in)

Destination > Folder
Choose > (directory you want them to be in, if same, choose same folder
Check the "Override Action "Save in" commands.

Voila, automated.

THE only problem you will face however is if the images are not in RGB format, so it will prompt you for that. If you're going from RGB bmp to Jpg, you shouldn't have a problem. However, if you are trying to change gifs to jpg, you will need an action to change their modes to RGB first then save as Jpg.
