We have a Compaq Presario V3000 running XP that will power off or hibernate on it's own and does not always power on when you press the power button. It's not because the battery is low or because of the power settings (I have hibernate and standby marked "Never"). It has to be a hardware problem since it hardly powers on anymore when I push the power button. I've tried using the battery and power cord from another Presario V3000 laptop and the same thing happens. I'm starting to think it's the panel with the power button or the motherboard. Any thoughts? Thanks.

These are notorious for having a bad video connection to the board from the video chip. You can try to send it to a repair shop that will reflow the bga solder connections. Or you can try replacing the system board. Or replace the whole laptop.
