preparing for certification

I am preparing to take up the HP UX certification exam.
The book deals with kernel managment, installing patches.. etc and other advanced stuff for a beginner like me. I need to practice these things on a UNIX machine and lay my hands to get some knowledge. I have a HP UNIX machine which I would not like to disturb as some critical applications are running..whats the best way to try out the advanced exercises present in the book.
suggestions please...
