HI,
My goal is to create a CD-based installation set that will enable me installing all our existing platforms(43P-150, 44P-170, 6F1, F50, 6E3, 6E4) to AIX 5.2 ML05.
I'm considering installing a standard IBM ML05 set on a certain machine type with all possible boards installed (so that the right drivers are loaded). Then the plan is to create a bootable CD using a mkcd command, and use it for installing all other machine types (probably I'll need two CD sets - for UP and MP machines).
(All the above is intended to minimize the number of the installation CDs for our field personal).

Will the above work as planned with different platforms/system disk sizes ?
Any comments please.Thanks

If your plan was one set of mksysb cdroms for modern power5 boxes, I'd say no problem, go for it.

But with older machines, with different cpu's and hba, etc, I wouldn't recommend the approach.

A golden rule of thumb when cloning using mksysb/mkcd is to always boot off of the AIX Install CDROM disc 1, then choose Maint Mode, Restore a Backup. That way it'll always pull in any missing drivers, kernels, etc.

You can also make a GENERIC CD or DVD wich need AIX CD1 to be build. That's the same thing than first booting with the AIX CD but in this case, all is automated.

A word of warning for ML5, make sure the system firmware is up to date.
There seem to be all sorts of strange problems if you try to run ML5 on old firmware.

populating generic cd you need aix CD1 because all the hardware drivers will be put on the dvd or dvd to be usable on all your difrents hardwares
