Hi everyone,

I am very new to premiere, but I have a bunch of ideas as to what I want to do to my video footage in terms of effects. Instead of asking, a bunch of how-to questions, what are the major differences between After Effects and Premiere, in regards to effects? I'd like to kind of have an idea of what I can and cannot do in premiere.

This is a simplistic overview, not a detailed exposition of the differences between AE and Premiere. Plenty of scope for others to expand on what I have said.

Premiere is great for laying out a program using video and stills. It includes a fair amount of compositing capability (ie building up images using layers).

After Effects is primarily a compositing programme, with much more control and detailed options than Premiere, including animated masks and other very useful features which you can read about on the Adobe web site. Great for detailed special effects, title sequences etc, but rather less suited to producing long timelines.

You can download trial versions of both and there are masses of AE tutorials on the web to give you more of a feel for the differences.

The AE user interface is rather different from Premiere and some people find AE harder to learn.
