Hi,

I am new with premier so this question is pobably basic for most of you. I got a movie strip from my camcorder to my computer. It is a contineous strip so I split it (ctrl+k) in the spots where I have scene change and put a transition effect there for instance stretch. But for some reason it does not use the last image it just rolls from the first one back to first.

If I cut a large portion of video out and connect two pieces manually and apply transition then it works perfectly.

I use Premiere Pro 7.0

Having just tried it, your problems stems from trying to use a stretch transition across a join.

This transition uses the material it finds at each frame, so if you out it across a join, it starts by bringing in the outgoing clip until it jumps to the incoming clip as it crosses the join.

You need to change the timeline layout.

When you have made your cut, move the incoming clip up a track, apply the transition only to the start of the incoming clip, and then slide it left so that the transition ends at the end of the outgoing clip.

I followed your directions and it worked perfectly. I have only one last question. What would be the quickest way to apply transition (something simple like fade in/out) when I just slice a video stream? There is a button Apply Transitions but it always not active...

You can set a default transition and then use the keyboard shortcut (CTRL-D) to apply it, but this only works if the CTI is at a valid place for the transition to be applied.

Or you can deploy the default transition automatically across cuts if you use the storyboard to timeline facility.

I find it easiest to create a small et of effects and transitions that I use most often and have that 'custom folder' open in the effects window. Then it is easy enough to drag a transition onto the end of a clip, or onto a cut for single-track editing, as you wish.

But you do need to be aware of what happens when you put a transition across a cut with outgoing and incoming clips on the same track. Premiere adds enough frames to each end (if available) to supply an overlap inside the transition. If you make a cut exactly on a scene change, then you will get unwanted frames during the transition. You need to shorten each clip to give a useful overlap or the transition will give unwanted visuals.

The alternative, which personally I prefer, is to use different tracks, manually overlap, and apply the transition only to the clip on the upper track. That way you can see exactly what is going on in the timeline.
