Preloader issues with Imported Images

Hello,

I seem to be having trouble selectively loading my imported images during my preload. The Movie itself has decided to preload the images in the very first frame of the movie clip instead of where I want them to load. It seems I have tried everything and there is nothing else in the first frame of the movie, so, I'm stumped.

I'm using F5 aand I've even gone so far as to import the images directly into new symbols hoping that might do the trick. I imagine this is something wuite simple, But Im really pressed for time on this project and I could use someone's expertise.

Thank you Anyone!

First off... Do you have a preloader on this? Probably so... You mentioned preload!
What's your code on the preloader?
Must I understand you want to load only some of your pictures when preloading and others at certain points in the movie?

"Who's that guy with the shades... What's he trying to prove!”

Actually I'm handling the preload the old fashioned way, Artistically bringing in each image and manipulating it at certain points of the preload sequence (inside a movie clip in some cases).
I have a tween for the % loaded graphic spanning about 100 frames. I would like to load each image at certain points in the timeline to have total control over the movie during the preload. I dont really have any code other than a goto action at the end of the scene. My scene is named preload and is number one in the list.
I wouldn't consider myself a novice at flash but I cannot remember coming into this problem with Flash 4 and can't help but feel this is a very basic fix?. Is it F5 indicative?

Still don't get it! Must be too old!
Dave?

PS: If you still have Flash 4, and it worked, why use 5? You can allways design the thing in 4 and import it in 5 (with automatic conversion) when it's finished! "Who's that guy with the shades... What's he trying to prove!”

exactly which method of preload are you using, getbytesloaded or _framesloaded=_totalframes.

And also, I still don't quite get it, I'm assuming that while the preloader is doing it's job you want some 'eye-candy' (as someone else called it) so that the useer ain't getting bored?

Right Dave.

Basically the movie is deciding that it wants to load the "bitmaps' or images into the first frame of the movie when I would like them to load in specific frames instead.

i.e. In the library I have (for simplicity sake) 2 images: Pic 1; 25kb, and Pic 2; 15kb. i would like the Pic 1 to load in frame 10 and pic 2 to load in frame 20 (bandwidth spread out accordingly). However, Flash is loading them both into frame 1 and hogging all the bandwidth (stalling the timeline) before it gets any further, which essentially gives me no timeline really to work with on preload "eyeCandy"

Sorry forgot to answer your question...

I am not using a preload method as of yet. Just bringing in the "Big Boys" into the Preload Scene. I may use a preload method afterward to give the play head a "head start" :)

ok

Taking your example of 2 pics:
Can I assume that you have placed the images on separate frames on the main timeline, and on separate layers.?
Have you made sure that there is no crossing-over of frames on the two separate layers?
You stay that its stalling on frame 1. It will only do this while it is loading the pictures or if you have put a 'stop' action in there. Otherwise it should move on once its loaded each frame in turn.

yes Dave that is correct I have placed the images on separate frames and layers. No crossing over.
Yes the frame stalling is due to the aotomatic loading of all the pics im my library, and there is no action of any sort in the first frames.
So back to the dilema of why is Flash deciding to load all pics in frame 1.
Also, Dave the bandwidth profiler supports tha fact that its not loading images in the frame I place them in. Although it acts normal with plain 'ol symbols without imported Images it reports the bytes loaded in the appropriate frame with those. The FlashGuy :)

ok Flashguy ;-)

I'm pretty much stumped. Can't figure out the problem on your side because when I try putting two images on a timeline and do as you say you're doing, mine works fine:

(130K)

ie: I have one image 16K in frame 1 and another 14K in frame 23. Each of the pictures has 20-odd frames after it for it to display. It wirks fine, it loads in order, it tests fine. So I'm stumped.

You guys are way ahead of me on this one!

I'm still at the pub... Slowly finishing my beer!

Well Davdesign and oldnewbie,

looks like its just between Macromedia and I now. You have proved that the issue is unique to my machine. I will have to pick their brain now. maybe its a setting or something obscure but simple.

By the way thank you for all the effort you've both put in and thank you very much!!! I am in debt to you a beer !!!

Thanks again

P- The FlashGuy :)

For future reference was my link and fla what you were trying to do? Did it work for you?

hi p

Got your e-mail. My SMTP server's down for the night so I'll reply here.

When I changed from f4 to f5 I had loads of problems with crashing out. However, this all changed because of other events which meant I head to reformat and install ALL of my software. Now, this is not to say you have to take the same drastic measures, but maybe a reinstallation of Flash would make a difference (although you've no doubt tried this already).

Anyway, I hope you get it sorted.

Thanks Davdesign and Oldnewbie!

yes the FLA file was exactly what i was looking for. Thank you. it was not until after I looked at your FLA that i realized I needed to get with macromedia. They are supposedly as we speak trouble shooting the problem with my original movie in hand. Hope they resolve the issue. I dont really feel like producing a duplicate.

I had a clean installation of Flash 5 on this machine from the get go, so, I'm thinking the upgrade ussues hopefully don't apply.

Well, thank you again for all your help!!! I must say that this board is the most useful i have come accross. thanks for being there for myself and everyone else out there.

have a great Day!!!!

Paul Dwinell The FlashGuy :)

cheers Paul

you too! dave@davdesign.co.uk
