The loadMovieNum action should be on the first frame of the main movie's preloader, along with a stop action. Once the movie is fully loaded, with it's own preloader within, or monitored from a preloader mc or an onEnterFrame function on that same first frame, the playhead is move on the next frame where the main movie is then preloaded.
This would assume there would be a stop action on the first frame of the loaded movie, so that it doesn't start to play until told to do so.
oldnewbie... I am having a problem detecting when the movie on level 1 has loaded itself. I tried monitoring it from within itself by setting a variable to true when it is loaded and then sending a command to level 0 to go to the next frame which is it's own preloader.. I also tried monitoring it from a looping mc in both movies, but not had any luck.. I have other instances in these movies where I have them talking to eachother and I am sure I am getting all of the targeting correct.. but still I can not do it.
Can you post a link to your .flas. Zipped up and in MX only format. Or you can allways e-mail them to me. Hit my handle for my e-mails, use the second one.

Are you simply looking to preload an external movie on level 1, within the a main movie's preloader? One that could be told to play when the main movie is fully loaded?
Sorry, I tried to take out everything else from the files... What you described is exactly what I am trying to do. I think it working up to a point... I have played with it so much that I can not remember what I did.. ugh.. should have made multiple copies.. but I got so pissed off.
OldNewbie... I fixed it.. not sure what I was doing wrong except that I think it had to do with using _root to target movie clips as apposed to using _parent and I read somewhere on this forum I think that there is an issue in flash mx with _root getting locked down, so thanks for your help.
