Is there an advantage or disadvantage to installing the 8.1 update on a new unused Windows 8 machine.

I have the opportunity to purchase a new machine. The windows 8 machine has more options and ram is more expandable, and its slightly cheaper than the new 8.1 machine. Im experienced with updating. So is preinstalled 8.1 less troublesome than user installed 8.1?

This will be a completely new unused machine.

Downloading the update to 8.1 is free and is pretty simple. If it is a new laptop just make sure you have your disks handy or the original install partition is untouched and you should be good to go. Took about 15 minutes to upgrade mine from 8.0 to 8.1. You will have a much better user experience upgrading to 8.1.

To answer your questions specifically, no there is no disadvantage for buying one over the other. Buy the 8.0 machine.
