/etc/init.d/apache2 restart
Syntax OK
Starting httpd2 (prefork) failed

anybody have any ideas why this could be?
thx in advance

Thanks for replying as I am in a state of despair and getting ready to wipe and reinstall the lot. Sorry I should have mentioned that there is no mention of the error in the logs :(

sorry looking in a log through yast but it was not the right one. here is the error
[Sat Jun 25 19:24:27 2005] [alert] (EAI 2)Name or service not known: mod_unique_id: unable to find IPv4 address of "asml"
Configuration Failed

it seems i have some how altered the addressing?, i do love these learning curves, the lesson today is always have a redundant server on standby before messing lol

yes asm1 is the server name.
thanks i will check that out but it seems to be down at the moment :(

shouldnt it just listen to all IPs?

hi just like to thank you for your help, i fixed this problem by disabling the mod_unique_id but not sure if doing this has left any vulnerabilities in the system, will research that later after setting up redundant server -) thanks again

This does indicate a DNS failure in resolving the server's host name, which would cause Apache some confusion.

Troubleshooting DNS problems are probably best left to the experts in the DNS forum.

ok thax i will give them a try. sorry but asm1 is the server name not the host name if by host name you mean my domain name? the domain name is best-anser.com

litton1,

In DNS terminology, any device (computer, print server, router, switch, etc.) which has an IP address is a host. The term 'host' merely indicates that it is a node on the network.

If 'asm1' is your server's hostname and 'best-anser.com' is your domain name, then your fully qualified domain name would be 'asm1.best-anser.com'.

Apache will try to query the DNS servers that you have set as default for that computer at startup, and if DNS queries fail, Apache will likely not be able to start.

If I may probe this point a bit further please… if my domain is best-answer.com and you are saying that apache is probably trying to DNS asm1.best-answer.com then how would I register (if I wanted to run multiple machines say under this domain) the sub domains, so even if there was asm1, asm2, ….. and so on. How would I register them so they would resolve correctly? Sorry but I think I am missing a bit of knowledge on this subject.
