Saw this in CI&M magazine. Belden is turning out pre-terminated cabling. And they are not just talking about patch cables. About 10 years ago or so, I was doing McDonalds updgrades to newer ethernet platforms. The support company sent pre-terminated cat5e to us with couplings. It was the biggest mess of excess cable rolled up in the ceiling. I don't see a big demand for this based on that scenario. 10 cables each with about 20' of excess equals 200' of un-needed cable stuffed in the ceiling.

How do you guys see this impacting the market and cable closets?
Will any of you use it?

Couplers! UGH!

Why would McDonald's need a 10G data network?

That much excess cable could be a code violation in some areas! I would just cut off the excess and re terminate on patch panel or jacks.

Hey, what's the problem? You just run the cable from point A to point B, toss the excess on the ceiling grid or hook it to a nail, and you're good to go, Cat-6 because it says so :)

Do the couplers come in colors?

This is a super solution to a dummy (ie end user) who doesn't need no fancy installer certifying cables and wasting time making the installation look professional.
Besides, in the days of you take it with you when you leave, it's so much quicker to just let it lie loosely in the ceiling.

We don't need no steenkin' codes.

The AHJ and fire inspector will say otherwise!

READ NEC Article 800. The drop ceiling grid is NOT a means of support for any cable, cheap, stupid or dummy!

The biggest market for this is going to be large Data Centers and large cube farm that use consolidation point and typically have raised floors. I dont see it taking over normal commercial office buildings. I work for a large national company that already uses some amp Preterminated cable and Fiber's in these situations. especially in the critical data centers where you want minimal impact and interuptions.

I have been approached by several different vendors about pre-terminated cabling both fiber and copper. Like alamtnman the data center(s) we have would really be the only real benefit of these. You can have them built to length and you can also have them made being staggered for the patch panels.

The fiber was more appealing to me than the copper was for the obvious reasons. Terminated fiber comes with a pulling head to protect the fibers. The copper can also come with a mesh sleeve around it so it does make for a good looking installation.

Most of the servers farms are now installing these between servers. They are can also be pre-labeled which I found good for the non-installers.. Like data guys.

OT I don't expect this post to be here long, but I hope it reaches the intended recipient.

I have been participating here for about 2 years. It's one of two places that I get to be someone else (anon) and I can say anything I choose without being rude. Take the time to click on everybody's name and you'll see posting history, membership, and votes and be able to trace posting and responses in threads. I'm probably the lowest of the 3-5 prolific posters on this thread, and you are the clear newbie choice.

Before you ever post the comments you did, get some education and learn some respect. I work in hospitality and I'm a Panasonic and PhoneSuite dealer. You can find me on the internet if you try. I spent half my life working for cheapskates, which means I spend a huge part of my work either cleaning up mistakes, or educating customers why professional installations save time, which saves money in the long run. I'm the guy who gets called to work on that legacy Mitel switch that's still kicking after 25 years. I'm the guy who learned the hard way that you never fix them better than they were, because you'll lose the upgrade bid.

I didn't deserve the star, and it was removed, but you had no right to comment on it in a public forum. Bad installations defeat the purpose of high technology every time. We both know that, you especially with your "RCDD", and me because of my 37 years in the industry. You would be happy to have me install your infrastructure because it would be high quality and to specification. You'd only get that chance if you lived somewhere near the Western basin of Lake Erie.

So, when you get to 10 or 20 times your 5 threads started and 10 posts, you may get to be in the "club". Until then, I suggest you read and think before you post.

Guys

This is a "technical forum". Which is the real point. Please keep focused on that fact..
