Hello:

I have "First Aid 2000 v6.05" which shows this POTENTIAL PROBLEM . . .

MISMATCHED COMMUNICATIONS DRIVER:
The 56000 BPS Internal Modem is set to COM2 - but there is no modem on that port. Your driver is set to a different COM port than your modem. Click FIX to bring up Control Panel - Modem Setup to change the port setting.

I have tried COM2, COM3, COM4 settings, as well as, IRQ3 and IRQ4 . . . each time having AOL 8.0 detect the modem and always am able to sign-on to the internet.

No matter what setting I have chosen - "First Aid 2000" still shows that same POTENTIAL PROBLEM speaking of the COM port I have chosen (COM2; COM3; or COM4).

I have setup this modem as "PNP" and also "Manually."

In CMOS/BIOS SETUP UTILITY - Integrated Peripherals, I set:
Onboard Serial Port 1 = AUTO
Onboard Serial Port 2 = DISABLED
UART = (disappeared with disabling Serial Port 2).

ALSO - in Registry, it shows ...
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\0000
CONTENTION=*VCD

QUESTIONS:

Does this sound like a "First Aid 2000" bug or do I really have a Modem (COM/Driver) problem ?

Should I just IGNORE this problem - since I can always get online with this modem . . . or is there something I should do to correct this ?

THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP OR ADVICE.

First aid can only detect REAL com ports, and a winmodem will set up a virtual com port to use.
Firstaid is useless in this case, and your modem is working correctly.
If it works, don't fix it, then uninstall FirstAid and email them to notify them of this fault. They've been notified at least 50000 times, and still have failed to update their program to recognize soft modems, something they should have done about 3 years ago.

Jim

Thanks for info, COMTECH.

I unchecked the MODEM in "First Aid 2000" settings and am using the program for everything else it does.

I didn't know I had a "Winmodem" . . . does this have anything to do with the FLOW CONTROL settings, e.g., Hardware (RTS/CTS) and Software (XON/XOFF) ?

It is set for HARDWARE right now.

I used (in DOS). . .
C:\DEBUG
D 40:0

and it showed . . .
0040:00 F8 03 00 00 00 00 00 00-78 03 00 00 00 00 0F 02

which is . . .
03F8 COM1 IRQ4 Communications Port
0378 LPT1 IRQ7 ECP Printer Port
020F (don't know what this is - nothing at that address)

Anyway, I can see that my MODEM's COM2 wasn't detected and now know that a VIRTUAL COM port was created, as you said.

Thanks again.

If you had normal windows Dial-up-networking installed, instead of AOL's proprietary junk, then Firstaid just might report the virtual com and modem correctly, although that's not documented in their help files.
Although this may be a hard modem, using the AOL dialler messes up Firstaid completely.
Being a winmodem, if you set flow control to hardware, you can change any settings you like and they will have no effect, as the modem uses software (it's driver, .vxd, and .dll files) to do all the processes, and these settings override any you set manually.
If you really want to screw up a winmodem (software controlled modem), set the flow control to XonXoff (an ancient bbs dial-up control), and see how well it plays with other children ;-)
"Rockwell RSS 56K-Flex 56000 BPS Internal Fax/Voice/Modem" doesn't really tell if it's a soft or hard modem, as ALL Rockwell modems are designated RSS 56K somethings. Cheers,
Jim

Thanks again, COMTECH:

I read somewhere that I can setup Dial-Up Networking to get online ... do you advise me to do this and avoid the AOL Junk you mentioned?

If I am reading you right - I should NOT set the FLOW CONTROL settings to Software "XON/XOFF" - but leave them set to Hardware "RTS/CTS" (as the installation set it) ... correct?

Please advise me on how you would setup this MODEM (if you have the time) ...

MODEM is inserted in the 3rd (bottom-most) ISA slot on my motherboard, while the other 2 ISA slots are empty.

The JUMPERS on this modem seem to be "soldered" or "drops of silver" and NOT "pins" that I can change . . . so I cannot tell what the DEFAULT jumper settings are.

I think this modem is a "Pragmatic Modem" with Rockwell Chips . . . other than all this, I am at a loss here.

I appreciate any help you can provide and am in awe of your MODEM KNOWLEDGE. :>)

THANK YOU.

Unfortunately, Windows built-in DUN doesn't play well with AOL. If your AOL dialler works, leave it.
Another quirk (annoyance?) is that you cannot use a second ISP if you have AOL installed, because of aforesaid issue of AOL not playing well with other children.

The modem is a hard modem, Rockwell ACF chipset (one of the best ever). It's currently on Com 2, IRQ 3, which is exactly where you want it.
The modem icon in taskbar should report correct connect speed, and not 57600 or 115200
Even on the worst phone lines, this modem should do 36000bps, probably more.
It is upgradeable to V.90 if you haven't already, but it might be difficult to find the correct flash for it.
I found this page: Drivers from the manufacturer: If all else fails, you can probably use the Zoltrix flash and V.90/V.92 driver for it, from my modems page:
Hope this helps. Cheers,
Jim

Ok, COMTECH:

You've given me plenty of useful information which I will printout and use.

I am very grateful to you for taking the time to work with me on this.

Thank you, once again, for sharing your knowledge with me.

Best regards,

Richard :>)
