Hi All,

Just joined the forum and would like to first and foremost say hello .

my scenario is this:
I would like to increase my networking ability and AD skills in a "business" environment, without the consequences of screwing up .
I would like to practice configuring DNS, DHCP, IPv4/6 and AD.
I have Virtual PC installed with Windows server 2008 running and also XP on another VM. I am going to start practising networking with AD etc but I wanted to know if anybody had any tips for me on how best to go about setting this up and configuring it in order to ensure all is working correctly? and also some info on further progression. Any links, books, advice, step-by-step guides, best practices anything would be extremely helpful.

I have the following book as a guide line - 6421A:Configuring and troubleshooting a windows server 2008 network infrastructure. This is to help me set things up but my install are all blank and fresh.

MY GOAL: is to be able to set-up networks from scratch without the aid of books, I intended to do it once and then again and again until I cant forget it .

Thank you for listening

Im currently stuck on linking a fresh install of windows server 2008 (32bit) to an XP machine. I have created a DNS, DHCP and created the computer and user in AD DS.
but i cant seem to link the two together. any help would be appreciated.

okay , i have added the pc to the group and i am getting an DNS suffix, ip add, sub mask and default gateway but i am unable to add the DNS setting.

I am completely lost and have no idea how to resolve the issue.

I am getting the following info on the dns event viewer:
Event ID:4011

what have i done wrong????

i have added the PC to the domain. then i created a user and computer in AD.

I am now logged into the XP machine via admin but i cant see any DNS settings set no prefered or alternative :-(

Stop creating computers in AD. When you go to a computer and add it to a domain, it's computer account is automatically created in the domain.

okay, i think i might off messed up everything then.

Im going to start again with a fresh install of server and XP.

Do you have a best practice for what order to install DNS,DHCP, AD etc.

the more i mess around the more i get confused :)

MY GOAL: is to be able to set-up networks from scratch without the aid of books" Sure hope you have the Forbidden Planet's "pastic educator" handy.
Thank goodness this is not about brain surgery. Setting up Active Directory is not brain surgery but can involve a few hundred changes/procedures, screw up more then a few and the patient is crippled or dies. I suggest you get a book on Server 2008 and read it cover to cover, a few times. The following is a link to one of the best references, 2008 is not much different then R2, so your covered...
