PPTP VPN browsing shares problem

I have a microsoft PPTP VPN setup for some of our domain laptops. Sometimes it works fine. Other times, they don't see all the folders or files under our shared directory. I checked all our DNS settings and the only DNS server is that of our domain controller/VPN server. The only change we made to the PPTP vpn connection from standard setup is that we use an pre shared key, and we unchecked use default gateway on remote network under connection properties. Any ideas?

We need more information to help. Can you ping the remote computer by IP? If not, posting the routing table here may help.
