I do not know if anyone has every experienced this problem but I am totally stumped. I have a connection to a windows SBS 2003 server via pptp with the built in RAS access. My problem is when I make a connection to the server from my home the VPN tunnel is connected but when I try to run any other applications they do not seem to connect to the central server or pc running the hosted applications. Examples are as follows I cannot connect to exchange server keeps asking for password but never gets to the server. I can not resolve any wins names, Act will not sync with the hosted PC.

Things I have tried or tested

I have tried changing the connection details from machine names to IP address but I still experience the same problem

I have tried putting my laptop into the DMZ of my router.

I have tried a different router.

I have tried manually entering the host files.

I have tried a different laptop that works at one of my colleagues homes.

I have tried my collegues laptop and logon details.

The only way I can get it to work is on a Wireless broadband that I borrowed from a friend. If I use my laptop with no changes it works fine on the wireless broadband it just seems to be my ISP. They have guarenteed they are not blocking any ports on my service but I am totally stumped as to what this problem is.

I appreciate any suggestions

Many Thanks,

Colin

This is a strange one, the first thing I would try is simply updating the network drivers on your laptop for both the wired and wireless connection.

Have you tried both wired and wireless on your laptop?

The next thing I would do is look into the MTU settings on your laptop.

Thanks.

Just a wee update

I have taken the laptop to my friends house andtried it on both his wireless connection and wired and it is working perfectly.

I borrowed his router and reconfigured the username and password for the broadband and connected to the office but the same problem is happening. The connection on the PPTP is made I can ping the ip address of the exchnage server but not the wins name and all the same problems occur

unable to connect to exchnage just asking for username and password.

Unable to connect to any shared folders or any other applications.

I am deciding my only option is to move to a new ISP.

Thanks,
Colin

Hi Colin,

FYI, I have had this problem before with Wanadoo (now Orange), cannot connect PPTP VPNs. They claimed nothing blocked but I have never had a problem on any other ISP...

IPSec VPNs work fine on the same connection. Perhaps an alternative to moving provider?
