Hi all,

Situation:
I work remotely from office. I used to use TCPIP over modem adn RAS to access office network. We now have option to use PPTP. I will soon be upgrading to ADSL, so speed will become better. I use 2 machines desktop and laptop
laptop has NT4 WS SP6a
Desktop dual boot to NT4 WS SP6a and W2K pro SP2

I can connect ok to internet, browse etc without problem from any OS or machine. My ISP provides me with the same IP address dynamically ( ihave the choice to hardcode the IP address in dial up properties, or I can choose to let them push the address to me) Currently set to recieve address from ISP

I have installed PPTP on NT4 mcs and configured to use 1 VPN. The RAS device has been added.

I cannot connect to office using internet from NT4. I get error 629: Remote data link layer has terminated.

I can connect straight away using W2K!
Desktop machine can access our Terminal server, but the laptop cannot (maybe licencing issue not sure).

The fianl point is that bot NT4 mc appear to have been upgraded (maybe through IE6 install) to 128bit encryption. I recently had to service pack them with high encryption.

Thanks for your thoughts

Matt

a dial-up networking connection can be initiated by various programs - some of which may have their own settings.
Make sure the username, password, are correct in each of the programs.
Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Internet Connection Wizard, Outlook Express, Outlook, etc. all have options to automatically start a DUNS connection.

Note, you may need to UNSAVE your password from the Security tab. Try dialing in to the server with Hyperterminal. Nearly all servers will respond. If the server accepts your username and password your in good shape. Try this then we move on.

Route once; switch many

CCIEWannabe,

Thanks for the help.

I only have one DUN ISP and that works reliably (either with password saved or unsaved)

My ISP userid and pw are different to the office domain ones.

To attempt to tunnel, I dial to ISP, then use DUN using PPTP "RAS device" to connect to office domain. Currently it presents me with the standard DUN logon box in which I enter the office domain login uid and password.

This then gives the usual "dialing <ip Address>" then "registering computer on the network" then immediatlley I get the "error 629" box.

Just occurred to me but is this a domain membership thing?

Thanks for the help again

Matt

The settings for authentication and encryption on the security tab must match what your ISP requires. I think this will solve your problem. Mirror the settings on the server side as to what your ISP uses. Route once; switch many
