Hoping that some guru can give a pointer or two...

I have two networks, Home & Office. I want Home users to be able to vpn into Office.

Here's my setup:
1. Each network has a Belkin wireless router.
2. Home uses a DSL modem.
3. Only static IP addresses are used.
3. I've opened tcp/1723, udp/1723 and tcp/47 on the Office router. (Tech support suggested)
4. I've opened special application ports tcp/47 and udp/47 on the Home router. (Tech support suggested)
5. Office has a WinXPP VPN Server (VS) that is accepting vpn conections.
6. Home has 3 wireless clients.
7. Office has 2 clients + 1 wireless client (the Server).

The problem I'm having is when a home client connects I get a message saying that a computer with the specified name already exists on the network. I know this is not the case.

Any suggestions? Also, am I doing any unnecssary steps e.g. unneeded ports?

Best,
Erik

You don't need ports 47 on UDP or TCP. This is a popular misconception. IP Protocol 47 is GRE, Generic Routing Protocol, not a port. But that shouldn't be your trouble. You didn't create accounts for your home computers on the server at work did you? If you did, there's your problem. If not, how did you specify your server to give IPs to remote clients? Maybe something with IP addressing, I'm stretching, I know.... Thanks,

Matt Wray

Thanks very much for your response, Matt. What do you mean "create accounts for your home computers on the server at work"? I have user accounts on the server of course, but they are distinct from the account names at home. Of course, I use the server accounts to log in there.

To answer your IP assignment question, I checked the box that allows connecting computers to specify their own IP address. Each computer on one network has a unique (static) IP address, that doesn't conflict with any address on the other network. My next test will be having the server assign IPs.

Best,
Erik
