I'm looking for someone who has setup a 8210 or 8220 (int csu/dsu) T1 router.Point to point
Problem I'm having is that for the life of me I can't these 2 routers to get a PPP connection up.On both routers I'm getting "LCP (link control) negotiation failed"
My HDLC protocol goes up and down once in a while, but I don't know if this is the cause of the total PPP protocol to be in the down state.I have both routers talking to each other on the bench so I know the T1 signal is good and not the cause.crossover cord(for T1)
The Device view software suggests to check physical layer or check PPP/LCP config options.
I have taken the default settings on both routers and still have the same results. You really can't mess up any kind of setting for the PPP on these things..it's so basic, they don't give you much to play with.I have tried 2 csu/dsu's on the 8210 with the same results....however I did replace the Intel 8210 with another brand router and it worked perfect..I hate to think the router is bad because it does pass self test,I'm more enclined to believe I've over looked a setting on the csd/dsu or router that is causing my problem.Do routers usually have a line by line process that I can look into and watch the "handshaking" process and see where it fails. The Log file that this thing has gives me a one line clue as I mentioned above..that's it :(
settings I use for PPP are. No compression.no pap/chap.Ip routing.static routing (no RIP).Numbered Ip route.this is on a T1.b8zs,esf.
question 2# if I have messed up my static ip WAN route is this enough to give me my PPP down problem (in general routing setups)? Intel is of no help and wants $100 to talk to me about this.

thanks!!!

I don't have experience with Intel routers but I do know PPP well enough. My first question is about your statement on HDLC. PPP uses "HDLC-like" framing, but you don't turn on HDLC and then PPP. It's one or the other. Second, what do you mean you had them talking on the bench. PPP was up back-to-back?

I have a crossover cable instead of using the T1 for test purposes,it beats having to run to the other site and monkey with the settings then running back.crossover cable connects the 2 routers together.(T1 crossover)csu/dsu to csu/dsu,back to back.
I would like to see some kind of process (log file)from this router that shows me how it lead up to the error of "LCP negotiation" failure.
There is no settings for HDLC on this router..it lists HDLC details as interface (v.35) received and transmitted Bytes/packets & bit rate (1,536,000)...and line status (input/output signals from the remote Modem/network )...ie..input cts:1 dsr:1 ri:0 dcd:1 & output rts:1 dtr:1.
PPP protocol state is always down...I can see it making "outgoing call" for the connect state then goes down.what gets me is there are no received or trans bytes on the stats on this when it's "trying"

other router has HDLC up...but over 5meg of errors received and none transmitted. The router that I think is transmitting these errors has the external csu/dsu and I'm wondering if I have setup correctly

If the other router is setup for HDLC, it isn't going to negotiate PPP LCP with the other. HDLC and PPP are very different protocols (it just happend that PPP borrows the basic frame structure from HDLC but behaves VERY differently).

I don't have any option to turn one on or the other off

ok,I solved my problem.I factory defaulted the external csu/dsu and the two routers came up "clean & green".I should have done this when I first started..the dsu came from Ebay along with one of the routers. There had to be one setting that I missed OR didn't get saved to memory when I changed it.Had to be something on the data port side because the T was perfect.
thanks for all your help....I'll be back <s>
