I have a passport 86xx on our network with a MTU showing 1950. This core is connected to a Cisco 6506. We have a MTU mismatch. I need to find out how to configure the Nortel to a MTU of 1522. Can someone please advise the details. Thank you..

You are correct in that the default MTU of the Nortel ERS 8600 is 1950. The ERS 8600 will also support Jumbo Frames on various IO cards and software releases.

If you have end devices that are generated frames greater than 1522 then I would suggest you focus on fixing those devices and not worry about trying to tweak the MTU of the switch. There are actually some devices out in the wild that will try to generate a frame larger than 1522 in order to test for Jumbo frame support. Motorola's Wireless LAN switches will try this trick to see if the Jumbo frames reaches the Access Ports.

You can verify the general MTU with the following command;

ERS-8610:6# show sys info

If you really want to change the MTU of the entire chassis then you could use the following command;

ERS-8610:6# config sys set mtu <bytes>

set MTU (with CRC) to one of three values: 1522, 1950 and 9600 bytes
Required parameters:
<bytes> = MTU value {1522..9600}

You may need to restart the switch in order for this change to take affect.

Cheers!
