My dad is using powerpoint 2003 and is trying to insert an object.

He goes to Insert, Object, Create From File, Browse and chooses a jpg. But when he clicks OK, his computer freezes and the only way out is to do Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

He tried to insert a mpg with the same results.

He *is* able to insert a Word Document (doc) using this method. He is just not able to insert a photo (jpg) or movie (mpg).

Any ideas why?

Thanks,

He needs to specify that he's inserting an image. There is a specific object type for images, already predefined in the menus. Just select Insert -> Image, rather than Insert -> Object.

Inserting an "object" is more fitting to a Word document than an image. The reason is that images are usually desired to be shown, rather than just giving an icon where the user can click and open the image separately.

hellohello1,

kjv1611 has some really good advice.

Acouple of things to note though. You need to have at least one picture in "My Pictures" folder; else, it will still freeze. When you go to Insert, Picture, From file; it automatically assumes the picture is located in "My Pictures" folder. That folder being the default location. If the folder is missing or is empty then PowerPoint is sort of lost.

The reason Insert, Object process may have failed is because it will bring in a picture only if it is a BMP. Everything else fails. (I haven't tried an Enhanced Metafile... that may work)

thanks to both of you for writing.

the reason he was trying to use Insert Object instead of Insert Image, was because we were both following these instructions (see 'the first step') regarding embedding video in powerpoint:

I was able to do it fine with my computer, but he was not. We are both using Powerpoint 2003, SP3.

So then, just as a test, he tried using Insert Object with a photo, but that also didn't work for him. It still worked for me though. I was able to use Insert Object and insert a jpg.

So I can use Insert Object and insert both jpg and mpg, but his powerpoint freezes when he tries. We can't figure out why it freezes.

Thanks,

Did you check to be sure that the My Pictures (or just Pictures in Vista) folder was not empty, as xlhelp mentioned?
