Good morning,

Is there a way to project a full screen presentation while having the the slide sorter view or normal view showing on your desktop?

Yes. You need to have Windows XP or later.

Turn on Extended Desktop. The PowerPoint default will then be that slideshow goes to second monitor (projector) and normal view on primary monitor.

There is also an option within PowerPoint for "Presenter View", which I find very useful when presenting - although it has a few bugs.
