Powerpoint footers in template don't appear in slides

I am using PowerPoint 2007 under XP.

I have a template which shows (in Slide Master view) a three-part footer.
(a) copyright;
(b) normal footer;
(c) page number.

Whan I have saved the POTX file and attempt to create a PPTX using the template the footers have disappeared. My background is okay, images and all. It's just the footers that vanish.

How do I get them to stay in all formats of slide?

After two days frustration I gave up, then stumbled across the answer by accident.
