I have a slide with text on the left and image on the right.

I want to change the image on a mouse click but retain the text without changing the slide.

I'm sure this must be possible but don't know how to do it!

Any assistance given will be much appreciated.

This is called morphing. For best effect, make sure the images are of the same size. Placed the image you want to show first, last in the order (select the image, then on the Drawing toolbar click Draw, Order, Send to Back). So the next image should be on top.
Choose Slide Show, Custom Animation, and click on the Timing Tab (PowerPoint 2000, other versions look around). Select the image to show first and click the Animate button. Then click the next image and again click Animate. You should see the order in the Animation Order box.
Click On Mouse Click to select it. Now completes the timing.
Now click the Effects Tab. Select the first image in the Order list. Place the Dissolve option on it. From the After Animation dropdown list select Don't Dim. Do the same for the second image. Click Ok and try it out.
