When I am in Outlook and I try to open a PowerPoint file, the error message, "System could not find the specified file" appears. The Powerpoint program will open but without any slides. The page is empty and the status bar says,"ready". I can save the attachment to my hard drive and then open it but I can't open it directly from Outlook. This is running on Windows 98 with Office 2000 and Access 97. After this error occurred, I removed Office 97 (except for Access 97) and installed Office 2000. Still, no luck. Do i need updates and or patches? Why is this happening and how can I correct it? Thanks.

Not sure why this is happening, but we see this with other files as well, not just Powerpoint. For example, we get this kind of behavior with CAD files as well. I'm guessing that it has something to do with the way Outlook (in general - we've seen it with Outlook 2000 and 2002) handles creating temp files and then telling the right program to open that temp file.

If anyone as any other ideas, please share them so that we might figure this out.

Seen this problem at various times with different OS and versions of Outlook. Never solved it and only seemes to be corrected when machines were re-staged.

To correct this issue, go to My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types and create the PowerPoint file association. Search the file associations list for the PowerPoint extension. Its probably not in the list.

File association has not been the problem on machine I've seen with this problem. All have the association and files open correctly from Win Explorer.

Its worth checking though just in case.
