poweredge 2900 hard drive addition

im fairly new to sever info but i my question is fairly simple. there are a bunch of sas hot swaps that act as 1 drive in my server. its only a local server and the office shared folder is just about full.

i dont need the new hard drive to act as the same drive i dont mind if it acts alone. if i were to purchase a sas drive and plop it in would it act as a lone drive?

It wouldn't act as anything until you told it what you wanted it to be. And i'll assume you have some type of raid already, depending on the raid, you could add a drive and make it part of the raid, expanding the size of the raid, and increasing the partition size, you would have more space.

pretty sure i have a raid so if i hotswap in a new harddrive it will just add to the storage?

With a raid 1, you can NOT expand the original array size by adding a drive under any circumstances, with most raid adapters.

With a raid 5, you can expand the original array size by adding a drive, but it is not as simple as hot swapping a drive

You could have a drive "act alone" as a single drive, but with raid adapters you need to setup the new drive as a raid 0, plopping it in will not do it.

What raid type do you have, what raid manufacturer/model do you have?
"Pretty sure" is broad in nature, it can vary by 99.9999>% either way, unlike exact. On mass, everyone on this forum sent their crystal balls out for re-calibration, so I would not count on much help without some exact info.
