To fix the noisy fan problem on 2650s :-(, unzip the contents of om_f_a04_bm.zip into 'tempdir' and use the 'racadm fwupdate -p -u -d tempdir' command to install. It will update the embedded remote access firmware to 1.07. This command is in c:\program files\dell\openmanage\RAC\MN. :)

This is the ONLY method that we have found will work. The firmware will NOT install using Server Manager.

Presumably it just lowers the RPM on the fans?

We have some new PowerEdge 1650's here and they're incredibly noisy (compared with all previous Dell servers we've purchased). Fortunately once built they'll go in a rack in our server room.

You would not want a rack-full of these, I can tell you...

In answer to your question, the update lowers the normal running speed by at least 2000rpm.

Do you have ear-defenders hanging by the door of your server room? People have to work in there occasionally.

I noticed the same thing about the 2650's but it died down after 20 seconds or so. Just on powerup the fans were really noisy. I haven't had any problems with the 1650's we have though.

In our server room you'd die of heatstroke long before you went deaf ;)

In our server room you'd probably die from old age before you either melted or froze, it's about 70deg, we'd be much happier at about 65... but, it's noisy also, course we don't actually do work here anyway ;)

We took off the blue parts of the fans and it's been a blessing! The fans still work but that annoying high-pitched whine is gone. Edmée de Klerk

Edmée,

WOW! What a difference. Getting rid of the blue "dummy handles" made a world of difference! It seems any type of resistance to those fans makes that noise. Just by putting my fingers close to the fan made that high pitched squeal. Those blue clips added just enough resistance.
I haven't tried this, but you may also be able to just clip out the blue grill on the clips, which will remove the resistance but still give you a dummy handle to grip it with.

Thanks for the tip.
