As I mentioned in another thread, I recently a poweredge 1850 that is about 4-5 years old. I made an attempt to copy the (linux) system from the current server, which is running on a small desktop PC to this machine and ran into problems. Therefore, I have decided that I will build the system up from scratch and want to do some things differently.
One recommendation that I read was to install server systems into a virtual manager to avoid hardware compatibility issues and ease migration to new hardware. From my best ability to determine, the unit has one single core Xeon processor (vintage Nocona I believe) 2.8 Ghz with an 800Mhz FSB.
I am getting conflicting information regarding whether or not this CPU supports virtualization (V-T support). Does anyone know if you need to have V-T support to run a virtual manager, such as KVM and / or do you have any recommendations for a virtual manager platform that will run on this system?
