Powerconnect 3524P gigabit uplink

I connect the Powerconnect 3524p ethernet uplink ports to a regular port on the 6224 (all ports are gigabit) and no activity lights come on either end of the connection. I thought it could be the cables terminated incorrectly but when I move the cables from the 3524p gigabit ports to one of the 10/100 ports the link is established.

Is there something special that has to be done to connect to these gigabit uplink ports on the 3524p ?
