We (my team) are tasked with migrating a couple of huge (and a few smaller) applications from Powerbuilder 5.0 to the most stable version of Powerbuilder available. We are also looking at upgrading the databases to 12.5 from 11.5. Are there any hints for doing this? Are there any tools for helping me? How stable is PB9? Are there steps I should take for migration? I know these are vague questions but I am just trying to get as much info as I can.

With respect to migrating to a later version of PowerBuilder, let me first state the obvious: back up your code.

As for things to watch out for, check for Windows API function calls and changes to events, i.e., a datawindow event may now have additional parameters in the later version of PB.

PB9 is not stable as PB8 but since ur upgrading to latest version then u can try PB9 , there is a patch for PB9 too.

Migration wouldn't really be a problem. As said u need to have a backup of all ur files as well as applications.

U have something called as a Migration Assistant which lists down obsolete functions which could be helpful to have a gross idea of the changes which u require to do..

Well... i would suggest u to go for PB8 as it is more stable than PB 9. This is my personal opinion.

We migrated 3 huge apps from PowerBuilder 6.5 to PowerBuilder 9 last month and have not had a single issue from the users so far. I'd worked on PowerBuilder 8, too. But what I've noticed is that PowerBuilder 9 is more robust than PowerBuilder 5 (the last known stable version of PowerBuilder). There is a tiny patch for PowerBuilder 9 for scripting nested reports. There are no other EBFs available other than the above as it is "very" robust.
