Hello,
Newbie to this forum / community.
I just recently purchased a Power 740 (Power7) server for US$260.00 locally, which seemed like a bargain. I am experienced in the x64 server area, having various mid-sized boxes for my home laboratory interests. However, I know very little about the IBM Power series servers. Still, at US$260.00, it was hard to let go.
I have check online and it has a PowerVM Standard licensing and an 8 core POD license.
I popped the heatsink out and noticed it has a 46J6698 3.55GHz 8 core Power7 CPU.
Now my specific question: What is the difference between this CPU and say, a 52Y4088 CPU?
Can I pop in a 52Y4088 CPU alongside the existing CPU and (with an additional POD activation), will they work together? Or does it have to be exactly another 46J6698 CPU?
The manual says they have to be the same frequency and number of cores. These two CPUs seems identical in that area. Are they compatible with each other?
If I may another questions: This server has 32GB installed. Can I add more RAM without need for CoD? The manual seems to indicate that CoD is not applicable to this server.
If I do happen to add another CPU (and related VRM), where can I obtain (or purchase) activation? Any idea about price?
Many will probably say it's overkill, but I run a lot of home-grown and built neural networks. It's just a hobby, but I'm looking forward to exploring this very interesting platform.
Any comments welcome.
Thanks!
