Can anyone clarify - do all POWER5 pSeries machines have to have their firmware upgraded via the HMC?

From the InfoCenter pages it seems there is no option to download the new firmware to an LPAR and perform the upgrade from there (as on a POWER4 machine).

Yes you can tha same method as non lpar system, major diffenece is that you have to make sure the floppy, crdom or install media is assigned to the partition you working on, also only these owned by the partiton will upgraded

I've upgraded the Firmware on several PSeries servers without an HMC.

If your server has an HMC attached, the firmware update can only be performed from the HMC. The firmware update must be initiated from the HMC. If your server does not have an HMC attached, the firmware update must be performed from the operating system.

You should also be able to plug in a network cable into one of the HMC ports and using https//192.168.2.147 (HMC1) or 192.168.3.147 (HMC2) get to the Advanced Systems Managment where there are some options regarding what version of Firmware you boot from

Lots of info here:

search on firmware fixes without an HMC

To perform this task, you must have root user authority.

1. Ensure the server firmware fix file is saved in the /tmp/fwupdate subdirectory.

If you are updating AIX, type the following at an AIX command line:

cd /tmp/fwupdate
/usr/lpp/diagnostics/bin/update_flash -f fwlevel

where fwlevel is the specific server firmware fix file name, such as 01SF2xx_yyy_zzz.
