Hi,

One of our clients wants to upgrade it's HMC from V6 to V7. The HMC is managing some p5 570.
He's been reading the "Hardware Management Console V7 Handbook", and it says:
... POWER5 servers must be at least GA7 SF240 firmware level ...

He's asked me what does GA7 means, but I don't know. I've gone to IBM's site, to firmware download and I see the latest firmware levels (SF240_338, etc...) but I don't see GA7 anywhere.

Does anyone know what does GA7 means?

Thanks.

By the way, the p5 570 are already at SF240, not the latest I think, so I've said that he probably won't need to update them.

Thanks, I think I will tell our client that GA7 is nothing he must worry about, just check the firmware level is 244_299 or higher.

I would advise your client not to upgrade, HMC7 is so slow it's almost unusable at present, the SP1 release a few weeks ago didn't seem to fix the problem, but did fix various grey box problems.

Well, HMC6 operated remotely from pc_client isn't exactly top gun material either...

Well, they plan to buy some new POWER6, and their IT stuff want to "play" with the new HMC before.

V6 Remote WebSM versus V7 https - I'd take V7 any time.

vterm on either is rubbish, enable remote connections and use ssh / vtmenu on either for a fast resize-able console you can cut and paste on, putty is my preferred client.

Irrespective of personal preferences for HMC interface, my understanding of the "General Availability" releases of POWER5 firmware is:

GA7 = release SF240
GA6 = release SF235
GA5 = release SF230

In summary "keep things at SF240_xxx" as a minimum. Works for HMC V6. Works for HMC V7.

If the customer plans to use the same HMC for both p5 and p6 servers, then there's not a lot to choose from.

HMC732 with MH01084 fix.

See the code matrices here to find out which FW level on their servers is most appropriate (SF240_299 or higher for p5):

p6: entry: midrange: p5: non-59x: 59x:

Regarding the comment about HMC7 being slow and unusable.

I have been using it since it was 1st released for my test lab, and the only problem i have found is with updating the HMC from a remote ftp site. I get round that problem by using media instead.

Usability and speed has been fine, and a big improvement on HMC6.
