I have been reading about power supply units and that they are one of the most important items for a computer. I know I will need a 450 watt power supply for a case that has 10 bays. Any suggestions as to what are good power supply's ?

well the number of bays a case has doesn't have anything to do with what power supply you need. Granted with 10 bays, if you are planning to fill those bays with Hard drives, tape drives, a couple dvd/cd burners, and zip drives, then yea you may need a 450 watt power supply. You shoud really look into what you are puting in the case. Like if you are just going to have a couple harddrives and a dvd burner, with a mid range video card and sound card, a 350 watt power supply is more than enough power. Common misconsception is more is better, no more just doesn't hurt any thing. I have used all kinds of different manufactures for power supplies and for the most part they have all got fried by lightening or power surges. Best bet is to by yourself a UPS not just a surge suppressor. The ROI on a cheap UPS is pretty good. For one computer you don't need anything more that a 450VAC.
