Hi all,

Recently I added a second PSU to all our servers, getting an entry in the errorlog that there's an environmental problem, this meaning that my system recognises the new PSU.But when I look at the output of lscfg -vp , I can only see 1 PSU instead of the expected 2 PSU's.In case of failure of my original PSU, will the system use the new one, or must I first reboot my machine before the system can use the new PSU?

thx in advance,

greetings,

RMGBelgium

The service guide, page 506/7, shows the proceedure to add the supply.
then click the p630 link, then the service guide - it says 10MB but is nearer 16MB !
In summarry:
Plug the new PSU in to the system. (system can be on or off)
Connect the power lead to the back of the new PSU - This bit is probably guite important ;-)
Check the AC Good LED is lit - Green.
Check the DC Good LED is lit - Green.
Check the Fault LED is not lit - Amber.
The LEDs are on the front of the PSU, behind the front cover of the machine.
If you still think you have a problem run advanced diagnostics to sysplanar0 in system verification to see if the system thinks it has a problem.

This guide is only talking about removal and replacement of a psu.I'm talking about inserting a NEW psu in the machine. The PSU has been installed correctly, the green leds are burning, AIX knows that something is present in the system ( he made an entry in the errorlog about an environmental problem, because the new PSU wasn't connected to the power yet), but the new PSU is nowhere to be seen in the configuration overview. My problem is : will the second PSU keep the machine running if the first PSU goes down?

You didn't bother reading the service guide then.
P506: 1. If you are adding a new power supply to a system that was configured with only one power supply
installed, remove the power-supply filler panel from power supply #2 bay.
2.......
FYI the installation guide gives the same instructions as the service guide.
Pull the power lead out of the first power supply and you will have your answer - if the system stays up then you will know. If the system fails then you will reboot and you can then be sure it is running from both power supplies, unless it logs some sort of error to say the second PSU is not functioning correctly ;-))
Seriously, the lscfg data is written during boot when the ODM is being built. The fact that the PSU does not show until after the first reboot does not meean it is not functioning, it just means that it is not shown until the ODM / lscfg table is rebuilt.
Running cfgmgr will make no difference because it is not an "AIX Device". It is a bit like when you update the firmware on a tape device, or similar, until you delete and recreate the device (re-read the vpd) it still shows the old firmware level. Only in this case it is not an "AIX Device" so you cannot do it.
If the LEDs look OK it is working, it will appear in the lscfg after a reboot and it will supply the systen if the first PSU fails.
