Is there a way of copying a slide master from one presentation to another or, better, of saving a master taken from a presentation as a template ?

You can save the file as a template by going to the file menu and choosing SaveAs. In the Files of type box select presentation template. You will see that it will automatically save in the templates folder for you. It will then be available as a template everytime you click on File, New.
