Hi :)

Hope you can help. On both Saturday and Sunday morning, my pc's power button squeaked when I turned on the pc. This morning, it didn't squeak, but it didn't do anything for a few seconds when I pressed it in, and then suddenly turned on the pc.

Is there anything I can do to stop the button sticking/squeaking, and is the problem likely to get worse?

Thanks in advance

Penny :)

Suggest that the button assembly be replaced as it will only get worse.

The power button assembly usually comes in two separate parts. The actual plastic button itself which is what you physically press in, and the electrical (momentary) switch positioned behind. As the plastic button wears (with age), friction can develop between it and the molding of the case. I have used a small squirt of WD-40 from an aerosol can to ease "sticky" buttons.

If, however, the electrical switch itself is playing up, you ought to be able to get a replacement from a good computer repair shop.

Hope that helps...

Roger is spot on!
I prefer to pop out the button (forwards) and with a cotton bud clean the guide hole.
On cheap cases the button itself can have sharp edges (poorly finnished injection moulding) these edges can be trimmed (rounded) with a small nail file and the button refitted.
The last point: the momentary switch is usually held in place buy plastic claws (which are part of the front panel) repeated heavey pushing of the button can partially or completely push the switch out from the back.
If this happens you will need to remove the whole of the front panel, push the swithch back and use a small cable tie around the claws to prevent them from spreading apart again.
