I'm able to produce pound signs in HP-UX 10:20 by adding the following lines into the /etc/profile file...

LANG=en_GB.iso88591
export LANG

A colleague is producing some files with cash amounts and the £ sign, which is also fine if viewed with the commands more, view or vi.

The problem occurs when these files are opened in Excel, when the £ sign appears as >>.

I have tried using the ux2dos command but this does not change anything.

Does anyone have any other ideas as to how I can get this to work as it should in both environments?

Other information: Windows2000 SP1 and SP2, ASU is being used to connect Windows to UNIX.

Thanks
Tim

Funny as this sounds but why don't you go backwards.
Produce a small table, export it as a tab delimited file, ftp it to the Unix Server, and then vi the file, see what character is shown on the screen. Then you have the one you should type in when creating the file on the Unix box.

This does not solve your problem but finds a solution to it, alternatively you could find the ASCII code for the £ sign and work from that angle.

Best of luck
