postion text over the top of java applet

Hi.
I was wondering if there was some way to position text
over the top of a java applet. Of all the searches I have done
no-one seems to know the answer to that one.
I've seen where people have used the <param name=wmode value=transparent> ( or opaque )
to accomplish placing text over the top of flash elements.
This method doesn't seem to work with flash applets though.
I am using css and have the z-index layering in the correct order.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You like to define the text in the html-code, and not in the applet-code?
