postgresql install questions

Can anyone kindly provide me with detailed links/howtos to help me install PostgreSQL preferably from tarballs.
No web server wil be setup on the postgresql machine. Apache from another machine will access this. Does anyone know what port does PostgreSQL run on.
If I want to setup Apache-PHP later, will that be a problem to get it working with PostgreSQL ??

get the tarball from postgresql.org, then extract it and in the directory there is file called INSTALL it is quite well written
postgresql is on port 5432, but default instalation does not open the port
no there is no problem to run apache/php later
